JP's Review of Faxon Firearms .308 Winchester Big Gunner AR-10 Rifle Barrel

I got a .308 16" gunner barrel. Its a fantastic lightweight barrel. I did check headspace and it did not meet march grade headspace. But what I think people fail to realize is that this is supposed to be more of a 7.62 NATO chamber. So its not going to headspace with match grade gauges. It will pass a with NATO gauges, or a 308 field gauge. Most the 3 sets of 308 gauges we have are all very tight 308 match grade gauges. But after an intelligent talk with faxon it made me realize this is not a bolt action chamber I'm used to checking. It is held to a little longer of a headspace so we can all shoot all that steel and surplus ammo out there.
Once I got a book out, read all of the mins, maxes of the .308 I realized that all of our gauges are actually under the maximum headspace by quite a few thou. (Which is what you want for .308 match grade bolt action barrels).
So do yourself a favor and only check headspace with the gauges Faxon tells you to. Otherwise your going to get pissed, and get yourself confused. .308 is 1.634nogo where 7.62nato is 1.638nogo and Field .308 is also 1.638.
So my deduction is that they put it in the middle so you will not have problems shooting both 7.62nato or .308, but its labeled as a .308 barrel.
