I'll preface this review by stating that I normally don't like Gerber knives. That being said, this knife expresses the best aspects of the Gerber company, and shows what Gerber CAN do when they try to make a sound product in the United States. The "06 Manual Combat Folder", which I'll refer to as "the 06" was based off an automatic knife that Gerber supplies to the military and some law enforcement agencies. Despite what it might say about "credentials" on the Gerber site, this knife is 100% civilian legal in most areas.
Discussing the 06 itself, this knife was made to take a beating. The aluminum grips are really thick and the steel liners aren't thin either. While I would have preferred a more grip-friendly material like G10, the design of this knife is very comfortable. For a large knife (3.625 inch blade) this knife handles daily cutting chores fine. The mechanism is fully ambidextrous, and the subdued black pocket clip can be rearranged for left and right tip-up carry. My 06 came with a passable edge from the factory, and I don't expect any trouble putting a razors edge on this S30V blade. This knife also has a window breaker, which could be used to save your life or someone else. The only thing that I don't like about this knife is that the aluminum handle panels will move slightly when pressed, and they cannot be tightened down.
In conclusion, Gerber should be making more knives like this one, and making them in the United States. I actually feel like I go...
