mvintx's Review of Guntec USA Ultra Thin Key Mod Free Floating Handguard w/Monolithic Top Rail

I was looking for a 7 inch handguard that wouldn't break the bank on my pistol project when I found the Guntec Ultra Thin Key Mod Handguard. I was a little hesitant to buy it because it comes with an aluminum barrel nut but then I was also trying to keep the weight down. There is an option for a steel barrel nut but it costs an additional $35, which I did not want to spend. The forenend comes with all necessary hardware for installation except for a barrel nut wrench and any instructions whatsoever. I first tried using a large crescent wrench but the thickness of the wrench jaws were wider than the slots on the barrel nut. Then I tried an adjustable auto wrench - us older folks call them 'Ford wrenches' and it worked fine. Guntec uses shims between the barrel nut and receiver extension to 'time' the holes used to mount the handguard and I would recommend you tighten the nut (make sure you use a little moly grease) to the point where the holes are exactly centered in the handguard holes before installing the screws. I had the barrel nut holes off center to the handguard holes as they are oval and there is room to align the top rail with the upper receiver. Using blue Loctite, I tightenend all six screws (don't have a little torque wrench) pretty snugly with a Torx screwdriver and let the assembly sit overnight. Next day I put 60 rounds downrange and notice the handguard has rotated enough to the point where my obsessive compulsive nature forced me to realign the handguard. Loosen screws, more Loctite, tighten screws, let dry, shoot again and the handguard has moved again. Hmmm, maybe the alignment between the barrel nut and handguard is more important than I originally thought. So I retime the barrel nut and pay particular attention to how the holes line up with the handguard. I got them centered as closely as I could, applied more Loctite and this time used a 1/4" ratchet to tighten the Torx screws. I tightenend them as much as I could without fear of stripping the threads and let it sit overnight. Next day put another 60 rounds downrange and all is well....so far. I think if it moves again, I'm going to consider buying the UTG super slim handguard. It features anti-rotational tabs and comes with instructions and a barrel nut wrench but costs $50 more. It might be worth the money to spare yourself the aggravation. Sorry for the long review.
