John's Review of Hawke Sport Optics Vantage 4-12x40mm Rifle Scope, 1in Tube, Second Focal Plane (SFP)

I chose this Hawke scope because it was an affordable option for a spring airgun that I'm getting soon. I wanted a mil-dot scope that I could use to estimate hold-over for longer distances with a .22 cal pellet. Upon opening that package to inspect me new scope, I quickly discovered an obvious quality problem. The range-calibrated ring on the adjustable objective broke loose from it's position immediately as I moved the objective to adjust for parallax. So, now I had a problem... send the scope back right away for a replacement, or try to fix it myself. I chose to fix it myself. This ring was only glued on at the factory and the glue had popped off. I carefully applied Duco cement and re-glued the ring in place. This seems to have been the right fix as its working fine now.
Optically, the scope is fairly bright and clear. It is not as good as my Leupold Rifleman scope, but for $117, pretty good. I've been using it on a .177 underspring airgun and it has performed well. I'm eager to receive the new .22 cal airgun and put this scope on it.
By the way, I can't tell where the scope was manufactured. The box for this scope says "Born in the U.K.". I suspect that the scope was designed in England and manufactured in China, but that's only a guess. I do not know and the packaging does not tell where this scope was made.
I am not dissappointed with this scope, just realize that you get what you pay for and I paid for a modest priced scope.
Pros:
  • Clear optics.
  • Clean design
  • competitive pricing
Cons:
  • overall quality only OK
