First Hogue Knife

by Matt S., Gear Expert from IL, United States Written on November 29, 2016
I chose the 3.5 inch Spearpoint X5 Folder.

Overall, I really like this knife. I am partial to flipper models in general, as well as being a knife junkie, so I was excited when Hogue announced this knife and eager to get my hands on one.

Made in the USA is not a huge priority for me but it is a nice added value.

The knife comes in a cordura zip pouch with a "flannel" like interior. Any included case/pouch that is more than a drawstring bag is a very nice addition, especially for knives over $150 (a lesson Benchmade hasn't learned).

The finger stud is a little taller than most but it gives you good leverage to deploy the blade and provides a significant finger choil when the blade is deployed.

There is a slight moment of stiff resistance but the deployment is smooth and easy.

The slight stiffness is likely there to ensure the blade does not deploy on accident, so I am fine with that.

I really like the blade shape and for as many edges as the handle has, there really aren't any hot spots or grip issues.

Comfortable in the hand whether holding normal or in reverse grip.

The push button lock is very easy and intuitive to use, although it is only on the left side of the knife. So while the blade comes with a lefty and a righty deep carry pocket clip, lefties cannot use their thumb to release the lock.

The lock seems to be fairly robust and has a lever to lock the button (again, left side only...sorry lefties). There is maybe a millimeter of side to side wiggle on the blad...

Hogue X5 Folding Knife. I finally got one!!

by IronKnight1991, Verified Owner from MO, United States Written on December 20, 2017
I've been wanting to get a couple of the Hogue knives for the last few years. They where always priced just a little out of my spending range. Mainly because I've been working on my guns and there's limited funds outside my budgeted fun money.
AnyWho!! I lucked up on a sale and I had a coupon. I got both of the knives I wanted, the " X5 folder and the EX-F01 fixed blade. I'm super happy. Those where the two knives I wanted. They're some awesome knives.
Pros:
  • great design
Cons:
  • nada
Best Used for:
  • EDC

One Heck of a Knife!

by Bill, from OR, United States Written on July 15, 2017
I've always chosen Hogue for all my Wood Wrap around custom Handgun Grips, for their quality and workmanship.
Their knives are no exception. My X5 is beautifully made! The quality and fitting of all the Parts is typical Hogue quality.
It opens smooth and locks up solid every time. The blade was Razor sharp out of the box.
The blade is quick to open for even the medium to small handed person.
It's surprisingly light weight for it's size which makes it a great EDC.
This knife would be a welcome addition to anybody's collection.
Pros:
  • Quality smoothness strength of lock up
Cons:
  • None
Best Used for:
  • EDC

great all-around knife.

by Travis Arnett, from KY, United States Written on March 14, 2017
I haven't had nor used this knife enough to give a review, but I will say the only thing keeping it from the fifth star for me is that I wish and was expecting the panels on the handle to be fitted with Houge rubber inserts, not the same hard fiber-polymer as the rest of the handle, would've looked and felt great. Other than that, the locking mechanism is a new solid design that won't break in the field cutting my own fingers, I'll leave their name out, and the spine of the blade is thick and the blade is also wide providing every ounce of strength it can. As far as accessories it comes with an additional pocket clip in case you do not like the side the factory mounted one is on. On sharpness all I can say is out of the box it will do the paper test all day long. That's my 2 cents worth, until I really use this thing that's all I can say about it, but I have a feeling I won't be disappointed when I do.

Extreme Quality

by Mr. Ed, from AL, United States Written on January 6, 2017
Certainly the best knife I have by far. The Warncliffe blade is unique. The grips are outstanding and remind of the Hogue grips on my Sig 226. Has a stable comfortable feel in the hand. Action is smooth. Not as quick as some but very good action none the less. Very nice piece.
