Billy's Review of Holosun HS503GU Micro Red Dot Sight
When I received this item, the outer 65MOA ring flickered and vanished. It intermittently came back, but I decided to contact the warranty support for advice and possible repair. Within just a few hours, Sean Holloway of Holosun's California office responded back with an RMA for repair or replacement. 2 days to ship to them, 5 days with them, 2 days to ship back and...They sent me a brand new unit with a much newer serial number than the one I originally had. This was, hands down, the fastest and easiest warranty work I have ever seen. The replacement that they sent me works flawlessly and I've been using it for a while now. Below is my review of the item itself:
This item is lightweight, clear as a bell, and extremely dynamic. The w&e adjustment knobs have a solid and tactile click and are inset into the aluminium frame for protection from abuse. The auto-wake feature is extremely sensitive and even a gentle tap with my pinky finger brings it right back from sleep in the same brightness setting it was previously on. I must admit, I like this feature over my Eotech that must be manually activated and adjusted before each use. The Eotech has a larger viewing window, but also weighs nearly three times as much. I bought this for use on my Extar EP9 which is a pistol caliber carbine that costs $400 and weighs under 4 pounds. I simply couldn't justify spending the money for another Eotech or adding nearly a full pound for the optic on this gun.
A friend of mine sat down to shoot it @ 50 yards and grumbled "I hate that complex reticle thing. I just want a dot." I held down the "-" button to switch reticles and his eyebrows raised. He then said "Well sh&t... That's kinda cool. How much was that thing?" I told him the price and he was impressed. He spent a full 10 minutes fondling it and playing with the settings before cranking into the next string of shots. We discussed at length the situations where the circle-dot reticle would be useful and when it would not. We both agreed that indoors CQB would behoove the larger reticle, but we disagreed about it's use at longer range. I like the ability to "size" my target to know distance with the circle-dot and he preferred not to be distracted or have his view obscured by the 65 MOA ring. The great news was, this optic could please both of our preferences. We found that sunny day shooting was easy to function at brightness level 8, when it was raining level 5, in pitch black level 3, or pitch black with 600 lumen flashlight active level 5. We briefly tested the two night vision brightness levels and they were more than adequate.
Comparing this to the Eotech isn't apples-to-apples, I know; However, that is my (now second) favorite optic, so I will compare them.
Eotech XPS2-0 pros: Made in USA, Window size, Thick polycarbonate lens, Lifetime Warranty
Holosun 503GU pros: Battery life, Auto sleep/wake, Lightweight, Clear reticle, Reticle choice, Easy access buttons, W&E adjustment knob covers, More common battery, No thermal shift, Far less expensive
I've been thoroughly impressed by both this optic and the Holosun customer support. I would not hesitate to purchase from this company again. (For those who might argue about the "common battery" line, please note: CR2032 batteries are in almost all computers, electronic car key fobs, garage door remotes, cable tv boxes, and more)
