Raffpap's Review of Holosun Paralow HS403B 1x20mm 2 MOA Red Dot Sight
I have owned and used two of the basic HS403A sights about 2.5 years now. They are durable, compact, quality, and nicely finished sights. My understanding is Holosun used to make sights for Primary Arms before branching out on their own. Whether mounted on my 22s, Mini 14, ARs, or one of my lever guns, they have worked perfectly. These sights have clear glass, crisp clear 2 MOA dots, a wide range of brightness settings, an incredible battery life, a 2-12 hour programmable auto shutoff, a motion "auto on" feature (more vibration than motion), and both a low and high mount. Like a lot of folks, I have moved my sights around as I upgrade but have never had a problem zeroing on any rifle. Windage and elevation corrections have always worked flawlessly, and the 2 MOA dot provides for a tighter zero than other sights with 4-6 MOA dots.
My first one, supposedly new (it wasn't - it was obviously a return I learned later) underwent an unplanned torture test, sitting over 24 hours in my mailbox at -30 to -40 here in interior Alaska. I brought it in the house, opened the package, and was horrified as it immediately began to sweat. In just a couple minutes it was completely glazed over in ice! Within 10 minutes or so it began to thaw out. As it thawed and I wiped it down, I noticed through the remaining ice and water that the sight was ON. Later I contacted Holosun to ask if they shipped their sights with batteries already installed, to which they replied that they did not (hence confirming my suspension this was a return). I'm actually glad this happened, because this one single incident proved to me that these are tough sights. Also there are videos out there of these things being beaten, frozen in blocks of ice, submerged under water for hours by scuba divers.....and still working.
As another testament of this sight's durability, I have one mounted on a Winchester Model 94 Trapper chambered in 44 Magnum, by way of a Pearson's no drill rail mount (great Model 94 upgrade, BTW). The recoil, while not brutal, is quite snappy and is much more than any of my 5.56 rifles deliver. This Holosun has absorbed the punishment of nearly 400 rounds, many of which were heavy 300-grain bear loads. The sight has performed flawlessly and maintained zero thru numerous trips, giving me absolute confidence in my camp/trailer gun. And because of the "auto on" feature simply racking the lever is enough to turn the sigh on.
Recently, I suffered my one and only failure. After moving the other sight for the 9th or 10th time (lol), I managed to strip one of the cross bolts. My fault, too many moves. I contacted Holosun Customer Service and asked them how much two replacement cross bolts and and locking brackets would cost me (two because I wanted a spare). They replied that they were sorry for the failure and assured me they would get both sets out ASAP, free of charge. Sure enough, they arrived five days later!
Some folks are unhappy with having to remove the sight to change the battery. Understandable but trust me, you won't have to do it very often! Mine have been operating off the same batteries since I got them. Out of curiosity, I once replicated a battery change just to see if it would return to zero. I removed the sight, detached it from the mount, removed and reinstalled the battery, reassembled, and remounted it to the rifle. At 50 yards me zero was only off by 1" to the right. I'll take that!
Sorry so long, but a very tough, durable and compact sight that will provide years of use. I highly recommend this quality sight!
