Andrew H.'s Review of Holosun SCS Solar Charging Sight for Walther Arms 1x

-unless you have the 1.0 cutout instead of the 2.0.

Holosun has outdone themselves on this one, and I say that as a first-time Holosun purchaser.

When I purchased my PDP roughly 7x months ago, there was a deal where they included an Ameriglo Haven along with the appropriate adapter plate.
Originally, I was going to use the free RDS until I decided to buy another RMR.
A few weeks later in March, I was ready to pick up the RMR but decided to look around and see what the latest and greatest offerings were.
Needless to say, I'm quite pleased that I had...

I stumbled upon the 2023 "SHOT Show" coverage where Holosun was showcasing a few new additions to their SCS line.
Removal of the need for an adapter plate, a thin profile allowing use of stock height sights, and the SCS features had sold me.
For the next couple of months, I couldn't find anyone that had them in-stock and they seemed to not be available yet.
Fast forward a few more months and I finally get my hands on one.

When I received the SCD PDP, I noticed a detail that none of the videos or pictures seemed to showcase initially, Holosun had further customized the body to melt into the slide and become almost an original part of the gun.
On the side, at the front, they CNC machined the same sloping contour that runs along the front and rear of the ejector port and extractor.
When you put you hand hand over the optic to rack the slide, it simply disappears and provides a perfect landing to run along the inside of your thumb and index finger.

So far, the dot needed only a single 'click' to the right and has maintained Zero ever-since.

I cycled through the three options and landed on dot+circle for now. With my sight and arm-length the projection takes up between 1/4 and 1/5 of the total visible area of the glass. This presentation is fantastic for my preference on my CCW.
Because the sight was made specific to the slide, it matches the width of the slide, allowing me to see much better around the optic downrange.

While original intrigued and mildly concerned with how quickly the brightness would change based on the ambient light, that doesn't appear to be an issue.
The brightness increased instantly when the ambient light is increased suddenly. Conversely, there brightness reduction is smoother transition when the ambient light suddenly goes dark. It's barely noticeable and makes sense based on the assumed internal circuitry.

Setting aside if you should go with open vs closed emitters and whether Red or Green is better for a given person, situation, or scenario;
The only concern I see that would alter depending on the person would be time to acquisition. There are pros and cons to everything in life, including the size of the glass and body.
The smaller glass means there's less surface area that your eye is seeing that is optic rather then the world around it.
On one hand you get to see the surrounding of your target down-range better, and on the other hand it's makes it harder to locate the dot on the glass.
I highly recommend that you practice your draw from various positions and ensure you are very accurate when quickly bringing the irons up to your plane of sight.
If you aren't very proficient with getting an equal-light/equal-height on your irons and you don't foresee any major improvements going forward, for whatever reason (Including health or physical restrictions) I highly recommend you choose a larger, more standard sized optic.
This optic greatly rewards better handling and severely punishes less accurate manipulation.
If you train to use the dot at the range, but then you can't find the dot in a fast and tense situation, you're doing yourself a disservice at a minimum and becoming a potential hazard at worse.
Play to your strengths and don't rely on new equipment to make you more accurate without any additional practice.

I can't speak highly enough about the SCS PDP and my experience thus far.
If something changes my views later down the road, you can be darn sure I'll update this review; Or add a new one if Optics Planet doesn't allow edits.

Speaking of OP, I ordered it on a Friday night and it shipped the following Tuesday. May not be AMZ speeds, but certainly reasonable. I chose a standard shipping option rather then rush it and received the optic, along with another darn holster that coming Friday. (I swear, you never seem to have enough holsters...) I haven't dealt with their Customer Service department yet, but so far it's been a good experience. I hope it continues to be a good experience for the foreseeable future.

I hope I'm not forgetting anything; I certainly buy more products then I bother to review because, who has the time?

Stay safe out there, do your research, and make a purchase you're confident about. Even if it's a different optic or no optic at all!
For me however, this may the the only RDS I ever run on my PDP for the life of the firearm. At this moment in time, I have every confidence.
