Decent earmuffs
If you want as much noise reduction as possible in a standard, non-electronic earmuff, these howard leight L3s may be perfect. I think they are ideal for indoor pistol shooting, but for outdoor rifle shooting there are better options out there. These stick out a lot, they're very thick, so it's guaranteed they'll prevent you from getting your face onto your rifle's stock. I prefer gel plugs for rifle shooting, though I may try the Howard Leight slimlines. Theres nothing wrong with these otherwise, they're just bulky, but perfectly comfortable. I intend to keep them as a loaner-pair for friends...

Decided not to spend for electronic muffs. These work fine and hive higher sound rating.

Inexpensive earmuffs that really work!
I am quite pleased with these earmuffs. They block noise better than any non-electronic headset that I have ever worn. They are very comfortable as well. My only concern is that the hoop that goes over your head and that holds everything together is made of a springy pair of wires. They make for a very positive seal over your ears, but seem a bit flimsy. I wonder how long these nice earmuffs will last. The good news is that, even if they break after a while, they are inexpensive enough to simply replace them. I'd buy them again.
Pros: Inexpensive, very good noise attenuation
Cons: Wire hoops work, but seem a bit flimsy
