Rich's Review of JARD Savage Model 25 Trigger System

I waited some weeks for this trigger (I got the one with 8 oz spring) to come into stock. Installed, I couldn't get the bolt in-- finally found that I had to slam it with the heel of my hand (trigger fully depressed, as always with the Savage bolt guns). That's something I dislike, especially as I have to do it with the action cleaning tool and bore guide I use for cleaning. It does not fit as it should. I Had trouble getting the safety to work. On close inspection, I see that the design didn't quite fit, so there was some hand adjusting done afterward. In this case, it meant that someone ground the side of the 6-32 socket cap screw that restrains the trigger when the safety is on. (The screw itself is inappropriate for this purpose because of the knurled head.) The grinding was so deep that it compromised the hex socket, and the safety plate catches on the crack in the screw gead. (I took photos that I was going to submit with this review, but I don't see a way to upload them.)I have removed the safety until I can get a screw to fit. I'm tempted to modify the groove in the safety plate itself-- a more time consuming but more appropriate fix than the factory expedient of grinding one side of the screw head off. The trigger itself is almost straight and sits in the center of the trigger guard, which makes it difficult to reach, as my rifle came with a thumbhole stock. At the range, I got 3 of my 40 shots as slam fires-- not from working the bolt roughly, but my precaution of leaving bolt up (uncocked) but forward until ready to fire. I found that I had to back the sear adjusting screw almost all the way back to avoid slam triggering-- and this is now at home, unloaded. With the screw backed out, the trigger pull hovers just under a pound-- that's not a problem from my perspective, but now there's perceptible trigger creep. Even still, I'm a bit hesitant to take it back to the range and try with live ammo again. The sear and trigger meet at what look to be rounded surfaces, not the crisp edges I'm accustomed to seeing. They don't inspire a lot of confidence. Oddly, the tops of the two retaining pins for the safety plate have also been ground off. Were they too tall to clear the stock when the barreled action was set in place? It's an open question as to whether I'll keep using this aftermarket trigger; I may try to tune up the accutrigger. Unfortunately, I can find no other drop- in trigger assembly for the Savage 25. The one from RifleBasix doesn't quite fit, although it is supposed to.
