Rick's Review of Juggernaut Tactical California Compliant AR-15 Magazine Locking Kit

I purchased this Juggernaught Hellfighter kit to make my Ruger AR556 rifle California compliant. Kit installation was fairly easy, following the installation video on Juggernaught's website. I also removed my gun's California bullet button and installed a milspec magazine release. At first it seemed like the Hellfighter and magazine release worked as advertised. I inserted one of my empty Magpul PMAG magazines into the gun and, with the gun's action closed, the new magazine release would not drop the magazine. When I pushed the Hellfighter rear pin and separated the upper slightly, the magazine release dropped the magazine as expected. Then I closed the upper, reinserted the magazine, and pulled the charging handle, and that's when the problem started. The bolt stayed locked to the rear and the trigger also locked up. It turned out that the bolt was jammed against the rear of the magazine follower. I had to remove the magazine baseplate and then remove the magazine spring and follower. As soon as I pulled the follower out of the magazine, the bolt slammed forward and the trigger of course became functional again. I contacted Juggernaught tech support; they directed me to another video on their website that discusses the fact that installation of the Hellfighter kit causes the AR's bolt to jam against the magazine follower on some manufacturers' magazines. Juggernaught's solution to the problem is to file a little material off of the rear of your magazine followers, to allow the bolt to get past the follower and to not lock up. Obviously the problem probably only occurs after the last round leaves the magazine, but Juggernaught support didn't ask my follow-up question about whether or not they've tested their homegrown "file your followers" solution to the problem to any extent. Because I've already gone through the trouble of installing the Hellfighter kit to my gun, I'm going to see if another manufacturer's magazine works with the Hellfighter. But really, my Magul 10-round PMAG isn't good enough of a magazine to work reliably with the Hellfighter? Juggernaught Support didn't seem that concerned with my situation. Perhaps folks should steer clear of the Hellfighter and figure out a more reliable way to make their AR's California-compliant. I'm saddened by the situation, because I wanted so badly for the Hellfighter to work reliably. It doesn't seem that good of an idea to file down my magazine followers, even a little, to make the Hellfighter work. I'm advising my stepson to not install the Hellfighter onto his AR. The thing could fail right at the "critical moment," in my opinion.
Pros:
  • Probably works well with some ARs/mags
Cons:
  • Could fail in some situations.
Best Used for:
  • Increasing your frustration level
