Like all Kahtoola products they first appear to be on the pricier side they offer great value when you consider the quality of the product and what I anticipate to be longevity versus lower cost alternatives. I no longer waste time on cheap gear, especially that which I rely upon for personal safety while outdoors. The KTS Hiking Crampon is a game changer for winter hiking where snowshoes are not required but microspikes are insufficient to penetrate the snowpack to the ice below. We have used the two pair we own on several trips into the mountains of the ADK and they have performed flawlessly. In terms of grip in the right conditions they cannot be beat. That said, they are no replacement for either snowshoes nor micro spikes. These would not be appropriate for conditions such as dog walking on icy roads, the spikes are far too long for that. Nor are these a suitable replacement for ice climbing crampons, very different design. Highly recommended. And as always the transaction from Optical Planet was flawless.

I’ve been running and hiking in the ice and snow for over 30 years. I have tried every brand of ice cleats only to find they either break in the first month, build up snow balls under your feet, or slip out of alignment constantly. I found these Crampons and decided to try them because of the unique leaf spring design and that they retracted or contracted to fit each different set of foot apparel. 2 sets of tightening straps along with the clip on metal device that actually fits over and above the heel. Worn them for 3 months and love them!!! They are a bit tough to hike in when the snow is less than an inch or in the mud because the front teeth are so aggressive. Just have to learn to pick up my feet more in those conditions. My neighbor bought a set as well and is equally as thrilled.They come with flat black rubber pieces which took me a while to figure out how they were supposed to fit onto the Crampons. They stretch over the heel and forefoot sections on the bottom to prevent snow ball build up. They work!
