I wasn’t sure about investing in this accessory. I mean, I can use my iPhone as a HUD as well. But the phone has a tendency to overheat in the sun, or at least become difficult to read. The HUD is bright, and with larger text, much easier to read.

The benefit of placing the Kestrel meter four or more feet in the air on a vane shouldn’t be underestimated— it yields much better results as the wind speed and direction changes. Having the HUD means not having to get out of position to check the current reading on the meter. That’s especially nice when shooting prone.

My one bugaboo is the backlighting on the device. Either it’s too dim, or my particular unit has an issue; I still need to check I’m with Hornady on that.
