Reg's Review of LaserLyte Full-Size Pistol Laser Trainer
As noted in another review, the POI changes. This is because there is no spring to push the laser capsule against the adjustment screws. As a result vibration causes them to back out. The solution is a short (~5/16") piece of feeler gauge (e.g. 0.003") placed so it presses the capsule against the screws. I had them back out repeatedly in a very short time. Once I added the shim it's been dead on.
Another issue is the pulse is too long (~60 ms) which results in a streak. I removed the existing capacitor and substituted an 8.2 nF cap which cut the pulse to <6 ms. Now I get a nice round dot instead of a streak. Before I couldn't tell if the shot was on target or moved on target at the end of the flash.
The trigger pull is rather stiff, so I stretched the spring to about twice the original length. I'll probably rework the trigger to make the break a bit better, but it's tolerable. It's a simple striker arrangement made of molded plastic. Making the sear metal to metal should not be difficult.
I'm ordering a couple for friends which I will send after I've made the modifications. So I *really* do like them even if they are Glock replicas (not a Glock fan). I liked it enough to buy a 19X with tritium sights. My LaserLyte has a 3 dot (not tritium) that matches the 19X sights. Until I find or make a trainer which matches a High Power, I've got the Glock 19X to match the trainer.
BTW weight is wrong, but you can fix that with some lead shot. I've not found my bag of shot is the only reason I've not done it yet.
Using scaled IPSC metric targets with white reflective tape in the body A area I've got a 24 to 200 ft range with 23 targets at 8 ft intervals I can shoot from my recliner. I practice sometimes with a metronome to time the shots. The tape gives a big splash of light when you hit it, so it's very easy to score the shot. Beats messing with a cell phone or tablet app. With the metronome running at 100 beats per minute I've been able to consistently hit the 24, 32 & 40 ft targets in sequence with a modest amount of practice. Start slow and gradually speed it up. If you make up scaled targets you should adjust the position of the reflective tape to reflect the lack of bullet drop. It's not a big shift. More important is that the targets be offset both horizontally and vertically. This compensates for the lack of recoil by forcing you to completely recover the sight picture. Without the vertical offset from target to target it's too easy.
