Sage's Review of Leapers UTG 1-4X28 30mm Long Eye Relief Rifle Scope

I purchased this elsewhere but I felt that I needed to put in an review for this so others might find it beneficial.
First, let me talk about the good things. The scope is well made and feels very solid. Image is very clear and I love the circle dot reticle. It is the main reason I got this and it is very crisp. The view from the extra large eye piece (47mm) is awesome. 1X is very close to being true as long as you are not looking at something too close. I'd say you need about 25 ft. Inside that, things look magnified and fish-eyed, the closer the worst the effect.
Now the not so good things.
First of all, this thing is HUGE and heavy! My own fault for not paying attention to dimensions before ordering it. 266mm in length without lens caps installed. It's about 11.5" long with lens caps. Keep that in mind when I get to eye relief a little later. It is also almost 20 oz heavy. That's about 3 oz heavier and 1" longer than most other similar 1-4x scopes out there.
Second: Leapers website says this comes with "Max Strength Medium Profile Lever Lock Picatinny/Weaver Rings" but I only found a pair of low profile rings that came with it. Yes the box was still sealed. I emailed Leapers to see what's up with that. The low profile rings, the massive eye piece can barely clear the rail, and lens cap does not fit.
Third, well this long eye relief. When I read that this has eye relief up to 14" I was excited because in my particular application (on a bullpup) it needs to be a bit further up than usual to clear a build-in flip up iron sight, and I was concerned that a normal 3-4" eye relief may not be enough. I thought you would be able to use this anywhere from 0 up to 14". However, what Leapers didn't mention is that there is really a minimal eye relief (probably around 6") in order to get the proper sight picture, and it doesn't work right if you get too close.
Do you recall that earlier I mentioned the scope is 11.5" long? Add on 6" on minimal eye relief, and you are looking at 18" of space requirement from where your eye would be, and that really doesn't work on a bullpup that's barely over 26" in total length. The front of the scope would be nearly hanging right above the muzzle.

Once I get the mount sorted out, I'll probably end up putting it on an AR that can accommodate such a long space requirement. In the meantime, I ordered the CQB version of the scope (without long eye relief) to try on the bullpup.
Pros:

  • Clarity/brightness is outstanding
Cons:
  • weight
  • size
Best Used for:
  • very long gun
