Volfy's Review of Leapers UTG 6-24x50mm Hunter Rifle Scope

I've always been a Leapers UTG fan and have them on many of my air and powder guns. Bought this for my Savage B-Mag heavy barrel. Shooting at small targets at the range and accuracy that .17 WSM is capable of requires higher magnification range than the typical 3x9. The UTG 4-16x50 I have on another rifle would work well also, but wanted to give this one a try.

The very limited exit pupil at the extreme magnification range makes it a bit difficult to center my view through the scope, but the larger objective lens does help. Also, image becomes less contrasty at higher than 20x, but it's only a problem at low light (after dusk) and otherwise perfectly serviceable. Are there better glass? Absolutely. Find one that cost barely over $100... I doubt it.

I would have preferred side focus/parallax adjustment, like on my other UTG scopes. This scope is rather long and the reach out to the front bell is a stretch for me.

It's long scope, which is actually a plus, as it allows for more fore-n-aft positioning on the rifle. I've had problems with shorter scope on long action rifle, where I couldn't set the scope far back enough to set the correct eye relief. Rarely do I have a problem with "too long" a scope. It is, however, on the heavy-ish side. Since it is going on a heavy barrel varminter, which I do not intend to shoot off-hand, it is a non-issue.

I have grown very fond of UTG's standard MIL dot reticle and lockable target turrets. For rimfire and especially air rifle, the extended MIL dots allows for quick holdovers better than a BDC.
Pros:
  • value
  • Build quality
  • target turrets
  • mil dot reticle
Cons:
  • weight
Best Used for:
  • long range varminting
