Raffpap's Review of Hi-Lux Optics Max Tac Dot 30mm Digital Red Dot Sight

I agree with the other reviewer, this is really a great and user-friendly sight. I own two. You get the complete package, AND you get it at a reasonable price. IMO, this is more of a hunting/plinking sight vs your standard AR sight, more at home on a slug gun, muzzle loader or plinker. It does not come with a riser. I was initially attracted to this sight by it's large mount area and dual locking nuts. This mount style has proven itself to be exceptionally strong on a Mini 14 and an 870 tactical. The screw in ARD (kill flash) also serves as a tube extension, and the screw in lens covers and neoprene cover are a plus in the event of bad weather. I also like the large turrets and windage/elevation adjustments which are easy to see and read, and easy to adjust. If you're an older fella like me you won't be squinting, guaranteed! It's just like adjusting a regular rifle scope.......no mini screw driver, ridiculously tiny allen wrench or odd tool necessary (just break out a coin or standard flat tip). These adjustments provide for audible and tactile clicks. The auto brightness feature works as advertised, although I like my dots less bright and use the manual mode instead, which has a very wide range of settings. You switch between the auto/manual modes just by pushing and releasing both brightness adjustment buttons simultaneously. To power down the sight just press and hold the both button for a few seconds. The brightness control buttons also provide audible, tactile clicks. Additionally, there is also a rearward facing red indicator light located on the left rear of the sight. When changing from manual to auto mode, the light flashes once. When powering the sight down, it will flash three times. No need to look thru the sight to verify. Tested, worked, no issues. This indicator light also serves as a low battery warning, although I must admit I haven't gotten that far yet! Also the lenses are 30mm, giving this sight a very FOV vs. a 30mm sight with 25-28mm lenses. I can definitely see the difference.

Just in case it matters to someone, this sight has two entirely different looks. The side shown is the ugly, gaudy one. The other side (left side) has more of a lean, tactical look. I kid you not, simply turning the sight around gives me the impression I'm looking at two entirely different sights. I don't pretend to know why or how that happened, but it did.

My only complaint is the 1-hour shutdown time. This is in the owners manual. Leatherwood Hi-Lux's website says this sight is programmable from 1-12 hours. So I sent them a message asking how to do it.....and never got a response back from them. I've tried every technique I know pertinent to my other sights to adjust that shutdown time, but nothing works. I do believe, however, that the 1-hour shutdown time resets every time an electronic adjustment is made. Not a show stopper because my Mini 14 is just a plinker and the 870 tactical is just a bigger plinker!

In the end I highly recommend. Both of my sights and their features work flawlessly. I have encountered no problems whatsoever with either sight and they maintain their zeros on their weapons.
