Joe G.'s Review of Leupold D-EVO 6x20mm Tactical Rifle Scope

If you're reading this you've probably also watched and read every single review you can possibly find. Honestly, they all fall short. So with a few unknowns about this, I took a shot in the dark, got it, and I love it!
First thing I want to talk about is what to expect. I have this paired with an Aimpoint Micro H-1 in a Larue mount LT660; it's the one that places iron sights in the lower 1/3 of the optic window. So, if you're using a similar set up be aware that you will have to nod your head down ever so slightly to pick up the D-EVO. If your head is in a position to see both, then your red dot will be in the lower 1/3, right where iron sights would've been. So I recommend using absolute co-witness mounts with this to see both simultaneously. Otherwise, glancing down at the D-EVO is like looking someone in the face, then looking at their chest. You can pretty much see both at the same time.
Second thing: I shoot ARs nose to charging handle. In order to get the best eye relief and eye position with this optic, I had to put the D-EVO on the fifth picatinny slot from the rear. This placed the objective (front) lens past the ejection port, or at least in line with the leading edge of the ejection port. With that said: NO (ZERO) dings on the optic from ejected brass. No interference with brass from the optic. No carbon build up on the lens, and no carbon build up that I could see on any portion of the optic. It should be noted I have this on a PWS mk116 which is piston operated, so that might have an affect.
I have a surefire x300 on the 12 o'clock rail. There's no view of it, so no worries about it looking around. I have noticed, being deep in a room, looking out a window from across the room, that while I can see one thing with the red dot, the D-EVO might be obscured, depending. Move a few inches, problem solved. This optic really doesn't change, in any way, how you shoot. So if you have good habits, they won't change with this optic.
The reality is I can spend a lot more time with this optic and learn a whole lot more about what it can do and how it changes the capabilities of an AR. A person can write a dissertation on this thing; it is phenomenal. Quick story: I was zeroing my red dot on a 5x10 piece of steel at 200 yards. I couldn't see the steel through the red dot. I viewed it through the D-EVO, lined up the reticle there, then transitioned back to the red dot. This allowed me to get hits on steel with the red dot and get a rough zero before printing on paper.
You don't have a red dot and then magnification. You have a "bifocal" of optics. They work as one, in unison, both at your disposal. Speed and field of view of a red dot, detail and precision of a 6x optic. Pure genius. I love it. It is the best of both worlds.
I wish I could report about doing a box test with it, return to zero, blah blah blah. Again. Anyone worth their salt on reviews, having the opportunity, couldn't help but right a dissertation on it. It's a thing of beauty. Definitely my favorite set up. I hope this helped. If you're on the fence with this, I say get it.
Pros:
  • great glass
  • Intuitive
  • great reticle
  • Can't say enough good things about it
  • positive, tactile adjustment clicks
Cons:
  • pricey, but worth it
Best Used for:
  • Best used for maximizing the versatility of the AR platform.
