Can't see clearly leupold - Leupold VX-3i 4.5-14x40mm Rifle Scope

I purchased this scope to mount on a 6.5 Grendel'right out of the box scope in hand attempted to adjust focus on a sign approx 35 yards away' image fuzzy i'm thinking wow is my eyesight getting bad' scope will not focus I had my buddy to look through the scope same for him will not focus. My buddy got out his Vortex crossfire scope very similar in size let me tell you! you could read a book at 35 yards with that dam vortex crossfire. I guess I just got a bad one so I sent it back to optic planet, Waiting for store credit to purchase me a vortex. I have heard nothing but good about leupold first one I purchased was not good. Sorry just being honest but I'm sure Leupold makes Great scopes just not the one I had.
