Marc's Review of Leupold Ruger Rifle Scope Mount Rings

I will be frank; I sent these rings back. I sent them back not because of any defect, but because I did not need them. The rings I purchased were "High" extension rings intended to be used on a Ruger No. 1 rifle. In the set of Leupold rings there is one extension ring, and one standard ring. For a Ruger No. 1 you need (2) extension rings to accommodate most scopes. I could have either purchased another set of Leupold high extension rings in order to have (2) extension bases, but then I would have had a extra set of high rings. Rather than having an extra set of $50 rings I did not need, I contacted Ruger and they sent me (2) medium extension rings. With the Ruger medium extension rings I had to switch scopes from the 4 X 12 X 40 mm I had originally planned to a 2 X 7 X 33 mm. Using the smaller scope I was able to use the medium height rings (supplied by Ruger), but I had to drive out the rear sight out of the dove tail. The objective "bell" of 4 X 12 X 40 mm in the medium rings fouled with the "1/4 rib" before the scope came back far enough for the rear sight to become an issue, or to even take advantage of the extension rings. As noted above; if I wanted to keep with my original scope choice I would have needed to by an extra set of high extension rings in order to get (2) extension rings. As you may or may not know, Ruger No. 1 rifles are extremely difficult to install a scope. Options are very limited. Leupold rings steel ring sets are the best on the market, and I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone. Th eonlt thing which would have made the situation easier is if Leupold sold the rings individually, which would have allowed me to have only the (2) bases I needed, rather than having extra hardware. Ruger sells their rings individually, but does NOT offer "high" extension bases; only 1" medium. If you were to be using a 30 mm tube vs a 1" tube, you would have no choice but to use an aftermarket ring like Leupold.
