Alaskabenny's Review of Leupold RX-1000i TBR Compact Digital Laser Rangefinder with DNA

So, I've used this range finder for a while now. The last four Caribou, I've taken at these ranged yards, line of sight LOS: 130yds, 500yds, 473yrds, and 570yrds, in that order. I haven't used the TBR feature set on BAS, because the chart lists the setting B for my 180grn 300 win mag, is based on a 300yrd zero. Who zeros their 300 win mag for 300 yards? I've never met a single person who zeros any hunting rifle for 300 yards, especially in 300 win mag. That 300yrd zero would give a completely lousy MPBR, Maximum Point Blank Range. I zero my rifle for 250yrds, which gives me the best MPBR plus or minus 3 inches out to 290 yards. 300 yards and beyond, I'm using my BDC reticle to great success. I haven't tried this yet, but if I were to use the TBR function. I would set the TBR to use the performance group selector table, set to group C. That chart or table is showing the most accurate numbers for my ballistics, even at the 800yrd settings, when I use a ballistic calculator. I have only used Barnes 180grn TTSX cartridges, rated for 2960fps. I don't like that I have to reset the range finder to go between LOS, Line Of Sight, and TBR. It would be great to have a screen that showed both the LOS range, and the TBR range, or at least, be able to toggle between the two. I like to know both numbers. LOS, for bragging about the true range, but TBR so I can select the precise aiming point to use on my BDC reticle. Other than the weird zero recommendations, and the above mentioned lack of efficiency in being able to get my two sought after ranges, without having to reset, and re-range, this has worked pretty good for me. There have been times where I couldn't get a reading, on what I've been aiming at, but I usually find a spot near where I have to shoot, that will result in numbers, close enough to satisfy my needs. This thing is tiny, and really light, which makes it easy to loose. A retractable lanyard or leash, secured to your belt, or other anchor point, is a must. I wish it came with a protective neoprene type sock, that can be attached to it, to protect it better, especially the lens. It can get banged around, so rig it up well, so you can pull it up to use, and tuck back away, safely.
