cwmiller69's Review of Leupold RX-1200i TBR Compact Digital Laser Rangefinder With DNA

Tested the previous RX-1000i model at a big box retailer, but since it wasn't available in camo I order the newer model.

Although the previous model had a setting simultaneously showing actual distance and horizontal distance (very functional and valuable in realistic situations), the newer model doesn't have this setting. The numerous rifle settings contain an option to briefly show the actual distance and then lock in the vertical distance (fail to see the value of this), otherwise it's either-or to show either the actual distance or the horizontal distance but not both and not easily.

In my initial testing of reporting long distances, I cannot get the unit to report a distance beyond ~950 yards. I don't currently need this capability, but this newer model is more expensive partly because of the distance improvement from 1000 yards to 1200 yards. If you need this capability I recommend researching carefully before purchasing this unit.

My primary need at this time is for archery, where the simultaneous actual/horizontal distances would have been helpful. Instead I've been using this unit set to report horizontal distance, and after extended use I do find the unit to be accurate and repeatable. Combined with the size/weight and convenient lanyard and case, I do believe this unit is a good option for bow hunters. If you can find the RX-1000i for less (and don't mind black if that's all you can find), I believe that is a better option than paying significant'y more for the newer RX-1200i model.
