Goes a little farther than expected. - Leupold RX-1200i TBR/W Digital Laser Rangefinder w/ DNA

theseakayaker's Review of Leupold RX-1200i TBR/W Digital Laser Rangefinder w/ DNA
I had my eye on the Sig Sauer Kilo 2000 but a friend suggested the Leupold at lesser price. Laid my hands on one to test out and liked the reticle design (with the option to switch reticles) over the Sig. I also like the fact of the internal ballistics and wind drift, although very crude if hand loading. So, I bought one. Testing it out on a shooting trip to the N. Georgia mountains in which my max range is 450 yards, I found the ballistics to only be off my drop chart by only .1 to .3 MOA. The method of finding your ballistics in the manual is a good starting point but I went through the ballistic options until I found one that best matched my drop chart.
I then took it to the coast where I do sea kayak shooting trips. I wanted to see what my range would be in an environment where there is only marsh grass, trees and shell covered beach. I was surprised to get ranges out to 1300 and 1400 yards on trees, 945 on marsh grass and 1100 on a sand bar. But, here is the rub, it took quite some time to get those hits on the finder and the sun has to be low on the horizon with the trees being very well lit. AND, the finder MUST be held very steady. Many times I used another tree to brace on to hold the finder steady. Even using the hand rail on a dock at one point.
I was also able to get ranges off trees and a shaded cliff bank at 1050 yards very quickly and just holding the range finder in the normal fashion.
For the longer ranges the range finder has to be in scan mode, holding the button down, while VERY slowly scanning terrain. Even at ranges above what Leupold list, I was able to slowly scan an area waiting for the laser to find a surface to hit and reflect back. It takes a little time and probably more battery but it will range farther then I expected. Now, are those ranges 100% accurate? Not sure, but based on measurements taken off my Nav. chart, they were pretty close and how accurate are Nav. charts?
