A lens shade is an important accessory for the precision shooter. Professional photographers have long known the value of preventing stray light from shining on lens objectives to help prevent flare and loss of clarity and contrast. During more than four decades of shooting, Ive always used lens shades on my telescopic sights whenever possible.
When the shooter wishes to remain unobserved, a conventional lens shade makes the objective lens of the scope sight less likely to be seen, but without degrading the optical quality of the system as do honeycomb covers which reduce image contrast and clarity. They are also much less expensive.
I purchased the 40mm 2.5 inch matte finish version (56187) to attach to a Leupold Mark 4 scope sight that is mounted on a precision rifle used for law enforcement sniper practice, training, and operational evaluations. The 2.5 inch shade length is a good compromise between effectiveness and making the scope too long for convenient handling and field use.
