Matt's Review of Leupold VX-2 3-9x33mm Ultralight Rifle Scope

First of all, I don't own a lot of scopes or a lot of rifles, so this may not be an "expert" review.
I put this scope on a CZ-527 M carbine. It is a bolt action rifle chambered in 7.62x39.
This scope fits the rifle very well and I recommend this scope highly to anyone who has this particular rifle. I am using it with Warne permanent MEDIUM height rings, and the bolt clears the ocular bell fine.
I've only put about maybe 80 rounds through the rifle since the scope has been on it, but so far the scope has performed well. Its held its zero perfectly and my friends and I were taking turns plinking away at clay pigeons at a distance of about 250 yards. My scope has the EFR feature, which stands for Extended Focus Range. Most experts agree that a 3-9 scope does not need a focus adjustment at all. However, due to my eyes not being perfect, I decided to get the adjustable focus feature to compensate for the fact that I don't wear glasses. I feel that by using both the zoom knob and the focus knob, I'm capable of seeing my targets better than I could be capable of otherwise with a regular scope. The EFR feature is designed specifically to be able to view things clearly at extremely close distances, such as 10 meters and up. Usually, a 3-9 scope even at 3 power will not let you see things clearly at such short distances, but with this scope you can, even though I wouldn't advise shooting at something only 10 meters away with a 30 cal rifle lol. This is why this scope is sometimes referred to as a rimfire scope, due to its extreme close range ability. However, it seems plenty durable and is withstanding the 7.62x39 recoil just fine. I recommend this scope on any rifle of similar recoil rating or below - maybe even harder hitting stuff, you'd have to test that for yourself. This scope has a small eyebox which can make getting the right sight picture more of a challenge, but gives you more clearance for the bolt handle to swing past it on bolt action guns.
Pros:
  • Lightwieght
Cons:
  • small 'eyebox'
Best Used for:
  • Lighter recoiling rifles that may reuire frequent changes to sighting platforms.
