Texas458's Review of Leupold VX-HOG 1-4x20mm Rifle Scope, Matte Black, Pig Plex Reticle
I have nothing against Leupold products and own several of them (old, new, cheap and pricey). I am not an optics snob here to preach about Nightforce and US Optics being the only way to go, etc. I own cheap and expensive optics and every set-up has its requirements, so to each his own, of course.
I ordered this particular scope to go on a 458 SOCOM AR platform dedicated mostly for pig hunting (dont plan on shooting past 200 yds, if not 100 or less). I thought the price was stellar and it being "purpose-designed" for Hog Hunting, it'd be right up my ally and I trust Leupold could take the punishment of a 458 AR and stand behind it with a good warranty. Those were my operating assumptions.
Upon arrival, I inspected the scope and it displayed typical Leupold quality- good finish, clear glass, well packaged, etc. Unfortunately all of the "VX-HOG" and "Pig Plex" markings and childish graphics just make the scope look like a cheap toy. The Pig Plex reticle that's supposed to be "so amazing for shooting pigs" is just a poor derivative and cluttered version of a tactical/BDC reticle. For my particular cartridge and application I see no value added and unnecessary congestion. I can think of various much better presented reticles within the same price range (maybe a little higher - but worth it).
I was hopeful Leupold would make a good, low price product that I would be glad to hang on my rifle, but I think that stops at the Mark AR series. This whole "Hog" and "Pig Plex" line is just cheesy and gimmicky, sorry. I saw other reviews that said the same and I tried to ignore them, but I regrettably had to return the scope because I just can't stand the idea of putting this on my rifle. I'm sure it'll hold zero, zoom and function as need be, etc. It's still a Leupold and Leupold makes good stuff. But I can't stomach it.
Personally, I dont recommend it unless the price point is your biggest constraint, even then, I'd say get a VX-I, Mark AR or anything else Leupold makes. I hope this gimmick dies out soon.
