Heinrich8000's Review of Leupold VX-R 1.25-4x20 Matte Rifle Scope

I have bought this scope for .22 lr competition and fast shooting on 55 yards with a Ruger 10/22.
It´s in my use now since 3 years and made around 3.000 rounds of .22 lr through it. For a self
loading rifle you have all hits in less than 1 inch spread wit CCI standard velocity and below.
If concentrating as much as possible all shots are in one hole with that small scope what surprised
me. The repeatability is very good with that scope and once you have zeroed it in, you always hit your
aim. The red dot is a joy for the eye since in Europe we have often bad light conditions. For a hunter
it is a great deal since without illuminated reticle it can be a challenge sometimes to find your aim.
Especially when sitting hours somewhere behind a bush or shooting rest, your eye will fastly accept
the red dot for better shot placement. The main reason for me to buy the VX-R was the advanced windage
for compensating your bullet shift. The scope I owned before was the VX-2 1-4x20 which I sold to buy
this one with a red dot. You could use the 1.25-4x20 also for close combat as in houses, gardens or
urban terrain till 200-300 yards. Only disadvantage is that it is not rugged enough if it falls down
what happened me. The scope had immediately a dent of 2 mm to the inner side of the scope since it´s
made of Aluminium. Here I would have wished that the material becomes more hardened or gets a plastic
layer to protect it better. The dent is not disturbing and the field of view is the same as the point
of impact. But when you are for example from military or a hardcore hunter and your scope & rifle often
bump hard against obstacles your choice should be a Nightforce since the corpus is made of steel only
but you pay 2 or 3 times what you would pay for this Leupold. Overall the Leupold convinced me as a
regular user to 100% and after I searched for hours and days comparing all kind of scopes, this one was
the winner for me having the best bang for your bucks.
Pros:
  • Illuminated reticle
  • low weight
  • clarity of optics
  • a lot of windage compensation
Cons:
  • corpus is a bit weak for harsh treatment
Best Used for:
  • hunting
  • Target shooting
  • combat shooting
  • close combat
