dave's Review of Luth-AR Buffer Retainer

This part is the same as all the rest of these things, IF you've seen ONE you've seen them ALL. The problem is this mil spec part is one of it's original design because it breaks too easily. The action/buffer impact sheers the tip off occasionally/eventually, so some people simply don't use them since they aren't essential. Other companies Like Heckler Koch have beefed up this pin to ameliorate the sheering problem, however this invites it's own set of problems because if you beef it up it's more likely to be struck by the buffer or to not be straddled by the bolt carrier and possibly cause the weapon to bind. The best solution to this problem is to use a captive buffer system like JP which unfortunately is very overpriced. A good solution to this problem is yet to come along. This part serves only to keep the buffer from lying out when it is taken down. During the weapon's typical operation this part serves no role other than to create possible problems. I gave it three stars because it is a horrible part that is worse than useless. You're better off to throw it away. However this is not Luth-AR's fault they are just providing the mil spec part which is as good, or as bad as the rest of them. Luth-AR seems a respectable company with good prices and it's no fault of theirs that this part sucks. This part CAN ONLY CAUSE PROBLEMS. That is a fact, it's not my opinion. THIS PART'S ONLY ROLE IN FUNCTION OF THE RIFLE IS CREATING A LIABILITY. The only thing it does is keep the buffer and spring from coming out when the rifle is taken down, and I'm not sure how or why that is important. Do yourself a favor and don't use this part. Just take down the rifle carefully at first so the buffer and spring do not fly out
Pros:
  • Lightweight
  • Cheap
  • Simple
  • Made to spec
Cons:
  • breaks easily
  • hole weakens lower at the already weakest point
  • tip breaks of and can interfere with safety, magazine, or trigger group
  • not reliable buffer can still fly out
  • can stop rearward travel of bolt
  • can stop forward travel of bolt
  • too much play (doesn't help align bolt carrier)
  • makes takedown of stock, buffer, tube and spring more difficult more difficult
  • Gets people in the bad habit of not being careful while taking down weapon
Best Used for:
  • NONE. Best when NOT used
