Most Helpful Positive Review Lyman 310 Tong Tool
The Lyman 310 Tong tool goes back to the 1800s, and started out as the Ideal Reloading Tool. Lyman bought the Ideal Tool Company and have been making them for a very long time. They are very basic and simple to use. The tool handles are made in two sizes, one for pistol cartridges, the small, and one for rifle cartridges, the large tool. You can buy the reloading dies for the 310 Tool for most of the popular calibers in use today and they are sold separately from the handles. If you are willing to take your time and reload one cartridge at a time, then you can do it just like our pioneer an...

Another reason why old isn't always bad

by RedLegEd, Verified Owner from TN, United States Written on April 29, 2018
This is a great classic tool that now uses aluminum for the handles instead of steel. I bought mine to use with .45-70 dies so I could reload rounds in the field. It's a wonderful way to take your loading bench with you, and you can be a basic or complex as you want. I put together a small kit containing this tool with all the things I need to reload 50 rounds in the field, and it works like a champ. Because the sizing die only resizes the neck of the case for the .45-70, it's best for reloading cartridges that will be used in the same gun. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting to reload cartridges away from their loading bench.
Pros:
  • light weight
  • Rugged and reliable
  • Easy to use & operate
Cons:
  • requires some hand strength
  • may not work well with autoloaders
  • will stick cases if they aren't lubed
Best Used for:
  • portable reloading

Could use better attention to detail!

by rick3240, Verified Owner from NY, United States Written on March 12, 2017
After a bit of work on my part these will work fine but a few things were annoying. First, the dies come in two plastic bags that they don't even fit in. Everything is loose in the box but crammed in. I had to file some dings out of the threads, better protection of the threads would have been nice. I had to get my first handles replaced because of a flaw, at least customer service was no hassle, Lyman gets points for that. The second set the shell guide didn't fit and required me spending a lot of time sanding and a bit of Dremel work to get it to fit. For the price I would expect better packaging and attention to detail. I gave them 4 star instead of 3 because of good customer service and i am gad Lyman is still making these after all these years.

Starter kit for beginner

by Ray, from FL, United States Written on January 30, 2016
I bought mine in 1960 in 38 cal. It was great learning tool--especially for some one on a limited budget. Provided all the fundamentals. Add a scale or dipper kit and you can acccomplish a lot. Can even sit on a range bench and load a few rounds at a time while varying the powder load from group to group. I would recommend to anyone just starting and especially those doing it without a coach. Not a lot of money to get started and see if you really like reloading.

Lyman 310 tools great for bug-out bag

by Rebel-Yell, from GA, United States Written on February 25, 2015
I have several sets of these neat little tool kits and have used them for years loading both jacketed and hard cast bullets. They work great for loading cartridges out in the field and are perfect for woods guns (38/357, 44 & 45 caliber revolvers) and bush rifles. There is a lot of hand pressure required to size the longer rifle cases. With the addition of some Lee powder ladles or a pocket scale, primer pocket cleaner, funnel and case reamer, this is a perfect kit to put in your bug-out bag, day at the range, deer camp or long-term survival kit.
Pros:
  • compact
  • easy to use
  • Fairly complete (add handles)
  • ideal for small batches
Cons:
  • Can require strength to size long straight wall rifle cases
  • Need to add powder measuring ladles or scales
  • Not for high volume reloading
Best Used for:
  • Range use
  • Remote locations
  • long term survival
  • Hunting camps

a piece of history, sorta

by raildr, from TX, United States Written on August 29, 2014
I have not used this yet but the craftsmanship is spot on. I reload with a single stage press and this makes me appreciate it!! I have several 45 long colt revolvers and just have not had the time to try this out.
