Al's Review of Lyman Borecam Digital Borescope w/ Monitor
I bough a cheap eBay endoscope. A couple of big reasons why this is better. The big one is that this is focussed SUPER close at 90 degrees. The eBay ones do not focus close enough to see your bore clearly. Neither are adjustable so what you got is what you got. Unless you pickup a 90 degree view attachment, the eBay ones only see straight ahead. That is kinda neat, but not what you're looking for. Even when you buy the 90 widget, they won't focus close enough.
Also, the quality of the Borecam is very good. In my opinion, you can see everything that you need to see. As I said, it is set for CLOSE focus. In fact, if you put the rod on the far side of a .45, the other side of the bore is blurry. You must put the viewing side right against the bore. When you do that, it is very clear.
It does not use batteries. You must have a 120v outlet. That could be a problem to some but I don't think so. You can record on it through an SD card that is provided. You can do stills or video.
There is one thing that I wish they would fix or figure out a solution to. It doesn't break down far enough. It a couple of feet long and it's going to stay that way. It's a one piece tube that is the length of a shorter rifle cleaning rod. I wish you could break it down to a shorter length for both storage and viewing pistols. It's a bit unwieldy. You can view pistols with it and I do but it's a little awkward.
For best results, put your rifle or pistol in a rest. Don't try and hold the gun, whatever the size, and use the borecam. You fumble around too much. It's far easier to use both hands to maneuver the rod.
Overall, for the price and performance...it's a really nice thing to have.
