Ron's Review of Maglula LULA Rifle Magazine Speed Loader

Are these types of loaders necessary? Not really. Do they speed things up? Meh... maybe a fraction of a second. I probably wouldn't even bother with this type of loader on a PMAG or something similar but they are nice on metal GI type mags like the ones I have for my 7.62x39 and 6.5 grendel AR's. The edges of metal mags are a lot sharper than polymer so these are a real finger saver. They aren't really much faster to load because it pretty much takes the same amount of time to flick the little lever as it does to manually push a round down into a mag. They do require slightly less effort because of the leverage you get with the little switch. The unloader feature is kind of fun to play with and handy if you want to break in a real stiff mag spring or something before hitting the range by loading and unloading really quickly. I mean, we all know the best way to unload a mag is to shoot it but if you need to break in a stiff new mag and can't get (or can't afford) a lot of range time, it's something you can do in front of the TV without even looking most of the time. This model is really handy all in all because not only does it load the 7.62x39 AR mags, it also loads 6.5 grendel because they have very similar case dimensions in the areas that matter for this tool to work. For reasons that are still being theorized on forums, all the current production magazines for x39 and grendel are metal GI type mags, if something like a PMAG was available (and reliable) I would have those and probably wouldn't bother with a loader like this. My fingers say thank you to maglula for making a niche product like this for "non-standard" AR calibers. This should work for .224 valkyrie as well but I don't have that caliber so I can't say 100%
Pros:
  • No more sore thumbs
  • Unload feature handy for magazine break in
Cons:
  • Doesn't pay for ammunition!
