This device works just as I'd hoped it would when I ordered it.
The BEV block holds the upper in place while the barrel nut is torqued. The splines on the larger end of the top (as pictured) engage the locking lugs in the barrel extension thus absorbing the torque as you tighten the barrel nut. The nub on the other end of the top assembly engages the bolt carrier (with the bolt removed) to help stabilize the upper as you work. Great idea Magpul, thanks! Even worked in my woodworking vise, so I didn't have to buy an iron bench vise.
