Skip's Review of March Scopes 1.5-15x42mm Tactical Turret Rifle Scopes
First off, this is a March scope and that says practically everything. If you haven't owned one, these scopes are absolutely superb! Incredible Japanese ED glass, impeccable craftsmanship, made from a single billet of aluminum. They track perfectly, the clicks are incredibly precise, and their reticles are informational without being cluttered. I personally place March at the top of my list, which includes Leupold, Nightforce, Leica, Burris, Vortex Razor, and the usual suspects. March are built like tanks, so no need to baby them.
I expect a sunshade and the usual accessories in a premium scope, and March delivers them. I like that they include an aperture reducer, which for those who haven't used one it cuts the light (reduces mirage and glare) while increasing depth of field. The scope caps are plastic, but you get two sets - flip and standard covers. Throw lever included as well.
Note that this is a SFP scope, so the reticle doesn't change with magnification. Spec sheet subtensions are stated at 10x, so any other power you'll need a dope sheet. Personally I don't calculate hold off the reticle so it doesn't matter to me.
Optically the scope is beyond reproach. Given this is a 10x turret it really is shocking how well they pulled the optics off. It's bright, clear, sharp, absent of CA, and only the slightest resolution fall-off at the edges.
While 1.5-15x, on paper, sounds like the goldilocks of magnification range do keep in mind that with standard rifle barrels (over 20") and with medium rings, or even high rifle rings, you'll see your barrel in the scope at 1.5x and it won't go out of your sight picture until around 3.5x or so. I would imagine on an AR or other platform where the scope is 2+ inches above bore, and especially with a short sub 18in barrel this won't be an issue.
The scope is seriously compact but feels very solid. At a bit over 20oz it's not lightest in class - a Leupold 3HD in 4-12x, for example, is several oz lighter, but while the Leupy is an excellent scope it ain't no March.
I couldn't select 4.5 stars, which would have been my preference. Half a star was taken because I think March reached a little too high with this particular scope - I personally think it would have been a better scope with an 6x range instead of 10x. Not going down to 1x means both eyes open tactical shooting is a no go, and for most platforms you will need it past 3x to avoid looking at the end of your barrel. Also, the flip cap scope covers are pretty basic. I'd prefer they provide aluminum screw on caps.
Honestly it's nit picking but at the pricepoint of this scope, and the fact that the customer is legitimately buying best-in-breed there can be literally nothing to pick to earn 5 stars.
I have 3 March scopes. Never had an issue, never expect an issue, and they are among my favorite glass of all time!
Highly recommended.
