smokeo's Review of Maxim Defense CQB PDW Brace for AR15

After searching for quite some time for the best brace for my new 300BLK build I finally decided to take the hit on this one. The brace looks good and has a very solid feel to it. After using it several times I'm now able to deploy it without depressing the latch, couldn't do so when it was new which is understandable due to the strong build and tolerances used.
I think this is the best brace on the market at this moment. with that being said there are some things that I believe should be addressed. The false castle nut on the buffer tube has small ridges on it for grip when tightening it I presume. These ridges protrude slightly past the lower allowing the charging handle to hit it. This doesn't seem to hinder the functionality but after a couple uses it does strip the black off of the buffer and leaves bare aluminum. The second issue I have is the finish on the inside of the buffer tube. Which is the biggest issue. The tube is left with micro ridges from front to back. I made the mistake of buying this brace with the standard style buffer and spring which rubs the ridges all the way down and forward when charging or firing the weapon. It makes a pretty loud and annoying sound (cant imagine what it sound like suppressed)I have some way cheaper buffer tubes that are smooth with virtually no sound. I had to break down an buy the JP captured spring and buffer to fix this issue. Which would have been done to begin with if I would have known. Shouldn't be issues at this price.
Pros:
  • Looks great
  • Sturdiness
Cons:
  • loud when opperated
  • needs finishing touches
Best Used for:
  • go with captured buffer spring
