What a disappointment

by jr, from NC, United States Written on November 22, 2014
You would think that such an expensive telescope would be reliable and not too difficult to set up. Well think twice, as my Meade Lx 200 has been nothing but a headache. The manual is not clearly written and riddled with typos and mistakes. What is worse, the controller that operates the telescope is an absolute pice of x@#$, when half the time the button you press does not do the indicated function. I am told that the cable that connects the hand-held controller to the telescope is an unreliable type of connection. In addition, despite several efforts I have been unable to successfully align the telescope, despite following the step-by-step alignment procedures described in the manual. I would not have bought this telescope if I knew how frustrating it would be to set up. Do not think it is going to be a simple process.

My new hobby

by Legacy Reviewer, from WA, United States Written on May 7, 2014
New hobby for my retirement. Recommended by a neighbor who teaches astronomy at a local university. About the only thing it doesn't do is make coffee, and I still have some of the manual left to read, so - who knows, it may! The GPS alignment is a wonder. The last telescope I owned was won selling Grit newspapers in the 50's. I built a box with casters, makes it easier to travel with. Off to the south and southwest, the light pollution drops off sharply.
Pros: ease of use
Cons: weight, but not insurmountable
