CaliforniaGunner's Review of Midwest Industries Trijicon MRO Quick Detach Mount

Short review:
Buy an ADM QD Mount.

Slightly longer but short review:
- This MI MRO QD mount, there is not direct access to the screws, making it difficult to align the screws in the holes and also to align the hex key with the screws, you have to screw them in with the tool at an angle. This increases the likelihood of stripping threads or the head socket.

- I cannot get the QD adjustment correct on the one I have. There is no sweet spot. Sent it to MI for repair, they were no help. They said it was supposed to be extremely, excessively, hyperbolically, overly difficult to remove. MI, that means it is NOT QD. Never had this issue with ADM mounts. (see long review for more dsetail)

Long review:
While the QD mechanism is a solid design and the overall finish is high quality, there is a MAJOR design flaw and I had an issue with mine that MI would not resolve.

Design flaw: There is not direct access to the holes making it difficult to align the screws and after the screws are in place it is impossible to align the hex tool with the screws, you have to angle the hex tool and it doesn't seat properly in the screws head - the flats of the hex tool won't engage with the [socket] flats of the screw head. Stripping the threads, tool, or socket becomes a significantly larger hazard. This also means your likely to under-torque the screws. MI should know better.

The issue with the one I bought: when I adjusted the nut so the mount wouldn't slide back and forth on the rail I could just barely get it to clamp by hand but I could not remove it without a tool [I'm fairly strong FWIW].

When I loosen the adjustment nut one flat less it's easier to install and removal doesn't require a tool, however, it slides back and forth on the rail and it's excessively difficult to remove. I have to use 2 hands, one to hold the button and the other to flip the latch, and I can just barely unlatch it. This is not QD IMO.

Bad customer service: I sent it to MI for repair. They adjusted the adjustment nut to where they believed it should be and sent it back to me. The paperwork said "QD mounts are supposed to be extremely, excessively, hyperbolically, overly difficult to remove" [paraphrasing]. WHAT?? That makes it NOT QD. It should not be so tight that someone with average hand strength can't remove it.

When I got it back with their recommended adjustment, I could not install it by hand on any of the rails I tried. I tested 6 different brands, one of them being an MI rail (which I love BTW). I then tested it on a rail I didn't need using a tool, it damaged the rail and was difficult to remove even using a tool for leverage.

I have had 4 ADM QD mounts, 2 UTG Mounts, a handful of other QD mounts, including a few inexpensive ones. They all mount with zero movement on the rail and NONE of them are difficult to install or release, not even the $15 Vector Optics mount (don't judge, it works great). If you want a quality mount, buy ADM. They are great quality, the adjustment is simple, the lever is intuitive, installation and removal is easy, the hold on the rail with zero movement, they return to zero perfectly [as far as I can tell], and my interaction with their CS was fantastic (YMMV).

This doesn't seam to be a wide spread issue but I'm not the only one to have this defect. There are a few reviews I found that had the same complaint.

Sorry MI, you lost my business. It sucks because I do like their other products and they do make very nice stuff, but the bad customer service, not listening to a customer and telling them they are wrong, not thank.

ADM on the other hand, their mounts are fantastic, I've never had an issue with them. I had an old DPP low QD mount with screw holes that were to small for the DPP screws (there was a reason for it, but I don't remember why). I messaged them about this and they said send it to them. They drill and tap for the correct screw size free of charge. On top of that, at some point they changed the design of the lever, when I got it back it had new hardware installed with the updated lever. I only paid for shipping to them. That is great service IMO. I bet if I had this issue with an ADM mount they would have replaced the hardware. I believe that would fix the issue I have with this MI mount, but I'm not giving them money to fix an issue with a mount that should be a warranty fix.
