ajchin331's Review of Millett 1-6x24mm DMS Designated Marksman Red-Dot Rifle Scope
Summary: This is a really great scope, especially in the sub-$300 price point. Several of my friends were looking to get a scope for their rifles to use in 3-gun. After having issues with the Vortex Strike Eagle (not holding zero), we went this route.
You should consider this scope if you are on a budget looking for a 1-6x optic that is relatively clear (remember, it's a $300 optic, not $1500).
Abuse: We have it mounted on an AR-platform, using a Warne SKEL mount. This scope has been shot in the rain (moderate to heavy), dry heat, and the rifle has been dropped in the dump barrel at least a dozen times. Scope holds zero, reticle is intact, and the illumination still works just fine.
Reticle: It's not OMG bright, but it is readily visible in daylight. The BCR 1 recticle has the holdovers out to 500 yards and they are easy to make out. Would prefer to see some numbers for easy acquisition, but not a big deal.
Turrets: Has a plastic / nylon base ring to cinch down and hold the adjustment. Was apprehensive at first, but it seems to work really well.
Glass: It's clear for a $300 optic. What more can I say?
Mounting: Here is where it's important. FIRST, get a decent, one piece mount such as the Warne SKEL and make sure it's not bridging onto your handguard from the upper. SECOND, be sure it is NOT OVER TORQUED. Warne recommends 65 inch-pounds on the mount, and a maximum of 25 inch-pounds on the rings. HOWEVER, Bushnell / Millett recommends no more than 13 inch-pounds on the rings. We were skeptical at first, but the scope does not move and holds zero.
Popularity? Recently returned from a 3-gun match in Louisiana and was surprised to see how many people were running this scope. Reason they chose it? Price. Hands down. Very little research other than that. I would hope you choose this scope because of how well it has performed thus far.
What sucks about this scope? The warranty is vague with no specified time limit or conditions. It basically states if you're not happy, then just give them a call. I called them and found out it's a 1-year warranty that covers workmanship. If you drop and break it the scope, it's not covered.
That being said, if you are an occasional 3-gunner, I think this is a good start. You can take your chances on a Strike Eagle (which has a killer lifetime warranty), but I've already been there and done that. God bless!
