Emergency Food Supplies
I am not a prepping expert, but here are a couple points for those just starting out in preparing for potential bad events in the future:
1) Be sure the shelf life is 20-25-30 years. There are multiple companies/items that the shelf life is only 5 years or 10 years or whatever. Most of the Mountain House products have good shelf-lives.
2) Focus on getting protein foods. This is why I like Mountain House. Many emergency food companies/items are mostly carbohydrates (pasta, oatmeal, etc.) which are rather empty calories. In a true emergency situation, any food is better than no food, but still look for proteins. Mountain House uses the large cans which are great for long shelf-time (as long as stored in dry location); and they carry a lot of freeze-dried meat items. The biscuits and gravy item is a good in-between or combo of meat and carbs.
3) Optics Planet is great. I only came across them a couple months ago. I ordered 6 items - they only have 5 in stock which were sent out right away. The sixth was on back-order (not their fault, this stuff happens sometimes). Anyway, they kept me informed of the order status all along the way on the item, and I received it just a few weeks later, no big deal.
4) The price on this Mountain House item was great - cheaper than I had ever seen it or similar items.
5) I will DEFINITELY be ordering from Optics Planet again.
