Nick is my Middle Name's Review of NightStar 2x42mm Gen-1 Wide-View Compact Night Vision Monocular

I realize that it would be amazing to have white phosphor quad tubes(I think that’s a thing?) but regular night vision is amazing all by itself. I can’t afford or justify spending money on some goggles that would cost more than the vehicle that takes me to work every day. Someday I might make it to the ‘DIY PVS-14’ level of funding towards this hobby of mine of seeing things in the dark…but for now this Gen 1 NightStar has worked out decently. I also bought a sightmark of similar price as the nightstar, as well as an ATN from 2006. The nightstar has mediocre clarity at best out of all of the Gen 1 devices I’ve purchased, but it’s more ergonomically friendly and it’s available now and for $170-ish you have the ability of seeing in the dark.
Pros:
  • Affordable
  • readily available
  • Allows you to SEE IN THE DARK
  • Compatible with any modern ballistic/bump helmet
Cons:
  • Does not have autogating
  • would have preferred 1x Magnification
Best Used for:
  • SHTF
  • LARP ing or LRRP ing.
  • Seeing wildlife at night
