Most Helpful Positive Review Gen 1 Night Vision is actually great
I realize that it would be amazing to have white phosphor quad tubes(I think that’s a thing?) but regular night vision is amazing all by itself. I can’t afford or justify spending money on some goggles that would cost more than the vehicle that takes me to work every day. Someday I might make it to the ‘DIY PVS-14’ level of funding towards this hobby of mine of seeing things in the dark…but for now this Gen 1 NightStar has worked out decently. NVG doesn't work!!

by Bedard, from ON, Canada Written on February 19, 2026
I received this product today on Feb,19 all pumped up and ready to use it! I put the battery in it then clicked the power on button and then.....nothing! So I took the battery out and tried again and nothing! I'm really disappointed I am now requesting a full return or trade for a new one.

Fun as a NV gadget, though no match for Gen 2 or Gen 3

by exJay, Verified Owner from TX, United States Written on January 1, 2026
For its price, the Nightstar monocular is a great buy - it really does work, the tubes are decent quality, the image is useable, the battery life is good, the IR illumination is effective. On the downside, I haven’t found a method of helmet mounting it, so it’s a truly handheld monocular, not a substitute for NVGs, but at this entry price, it’s hard to beat.
Pros:
  • Price
  • image quality
Cons:
  • Lack of standard mounting options
Best Used for:
  • Hand-held use

Image intensifier burned out in a few hours

by David, from NJ, United States Written on September 29, 2023
Ran the nvg for a short time period and the intensifier is now so dim it has rendered the optic useless. Tried blackout boxing it, and different batteries with no changes in imaging
Pros:
  • None
Cons:
  • NOT built to last
