Legacy Reviewer's Review of Nikon Monarch 3 10x42mm Binoculars - Hunting Binoculars

These were purchased to replace a stolen set of Bino's. My previous ones were Nikons as well, and I'm certainly pleased with this set. Although only allowing for four distance settings, the adjustable eye relief feature has proven handy, and has been able to be adjusted to the right distance for my eyes. The lens covers may take a bit of getting used to, but when thought through, you can see that they have tried well to cover off on their effectiveness, as well as make their rapid removal in the field as simple as possible. One thumb to remove the ocular covers, and your two "pinkies" can flick down the objective covers. The fact the objective covers are captive is a lot better than the system that was present on my old set of Nikons (similar to their "Action" range) that were purchased around 2001.
The ability to attach the ocular covers to a strap is a nice touch too.
My only criticism would be the attachment point for the neck strap. As I am using a Crooked Horn binocular strap, and these clip into rings which you have to add yourself. I wouldn't mind seeing the Nikon neck strap that comes with it having the same ability to clip/unclip easily to make for easy interchangeability between the two straps. But this is a personal preference only. Out in the field, I have had no problems with these binoculars, and their performance so far has been faultless. Great clarity and light transmission so far, but I haven't yet tested them in a dawn/dusk situation, only in overcast conditions.
The size and weight of these is also a welcome change to my old set. Their compactness makes it easier to pack them into your day pack before going, and also allows them to be less obtrusive whilst wearing them. Any weight you can save on any equipment you take into the field is also going to be a plus when you start humping lots of gear around on your back and body. These bino's are solid, without being too weighty.
I think that if you are on a budget that excludes you from purchasing some of the higher end European bino's, then these Nikons in either 8 x 42 or 10 x 42 will offer the hunter/wildlife watcher all they're after at a very reasonable price.

Pros: Great value for a compact hunting binocular
Cons: None so far.
