Nikon takes its EDG to a smaller binocular. I can't say these are terribly portable as the EDG's are heavy but these employ the same ergonomics and the same stability as their bigger brothers. While the lower magnification in some ways does not need the nicer optics what comes into play is the depth of field if you're tracking a quickly moving object such as an airplane, racecar or a flying bird, airport watchers, race fans and birdwatchers take note! You barely have to focus and thanks to the low magnification everything just looks sharp all the time no matter what, it's like driving a huge V8 that runs well uphill in top gear no matter what the speed. Color fidelity is outstanding, just like all the EDG's it feels like you are looking at a photograph taken under ideal conditions for that object. The brightness at this magnification given the nice optics is also outstanding, so if you need a low light glass at a size smaller than 42mm this optic will fit your ticket to portability and size/weight constraints.
The problem is that good as these are, the price just isn't worth it. They are amazing but at 8 power you just don't need this nice glass, and if you truly need a low light bino, you can pay less, have a slightly sharper image but a much larger objective and get the job done. These are for a handful of wealthy, fortunate people who need to scratch the "just because" itch, or James Bond. You can do almost as well in so many ways for so much less in most cases, but if yo...
