Joe, Average's Review of Nikon Prostaff 5 Hunters Rifle Scope - 3.5-14x50

I've had this scope on my bushmaster 308 orc for 2-3 years now. The rifle's main purpose is hunting pigs so I wanted something that could get enough magnification to make ethical kill shots while also being able to turn down the mag for use with a thermal clip on. What I've found is that:
a) the diode for the green completely died on me just after the warranty ended.
b) the red diode is always on even if it's put to "OFF" or the green setting. It's extremely faint and wouldn't have noticed it if I wasn't out in a blind when it was pitch black.
c) tying into b, the batteries would be dead the next time I picked up my rifle so I had to take the battery out or expect to change the battery every time I wanted to turn the scope on.
d) the red is too bright to use at night and halos would form in the scope even on the lowest setting
e) (Wow this is too long) The dot isn't all that bright at the highest setting for use during the day either so I'm not exactly sure when the illuminated reticle is all that useful.
The glass is pretty clear even at dusk and haven't had any issues with the seals or toughness of the optic. I like the scope but can't recommend this product specifically due to the issues I've had. Your mileage may very. I still have the scope and bought the same one without the it and have been extremely happy with it.
I did buy the ir version off of Optics Planet.
