Ron's Review of Nikon ProStaff Rimfire II 4-12x40 Matte BDC Rifle Scope

Nikon Prostaff Rimfire II 4-12x40. This is a great scope that you can pickup for around $100, when on sale at OP. At that price, it's an excellent buy. Has very clear glass, and sharp sight picture, even at the highest power. No blurring around the edges, just the quality you would expect from Nikon. The build is solid and not too heavy for a mid-power scope. Seems like a lot of scope for a rimfire, but that depends on your individual eyesight. Focusing is excellent, but you will have to dial it down to about 6 to manage the parallax at less than 50 yds. (The advertised parallax distance is 75yds). What makes this scope really good is the BDC reticle used in conjunction with the Nikon Spot-On Ballistics app. I found the drop compensation to be pretty accurate, and the app really does have just about every 22lr, 22 mag, or 17 hmr rounds available. The reticle is unique to Nikon in that the drop down marks are small circles instead of hash marks or dots. Much easier for getting on small targets quickly. The reticle is in a matte gold finish which I found preferable to black in separating dark targets from the cross hairs. It was easy to zero and seemed consistent in tracking, although I didn't do a formal tracking exercise. All in all, you won't make a bad choice with this scope, especially for the price. And, not to mention Nikon's lifetime warranty. Service from Optics Planet is good, though not the fastest or best on communication if you're used to Amazon. Patience is the word with OP.
