QNM's Review of ODIN Works Creedmoor Barrel, Tactical Match Profile w/tunable GB

First off, the firs time I recieved the package that was supposed to contain this item the box was empty. A quick call to optics planet and they sent a new one out. Kuddos on that. Now on to the review on the item.

Similar to another reviewer on the actual OdinWorks site, and others experienceing similar issues on build forums, I have been struggling to get this barrel to cycle properly.

Upon completion of this build I took my rifle to the range to break in and sight in. Immediately noticed that the rifle would not cycle. I adjusted the gas block that came with the barrel throughout the full range (starting almoat fully closed) to minimal improvment. At the closed end the rifle did not cycle for obvious reasons (undergassed), but closer to fully opened the rifle still was not cycling properly (no ejection) but now with signs of overgassing on the brass paired with excess gas in the chamber.

After researching I purchased a new BCG with smaller firing pin, firing pin hole, and dual ejectors. I followed the process through the full range of the gas block once again and WAS able to achieve ejection on Hornady brass, but not with federal whihc was stovepiping on every shot. Signs of overgass were gone, but cycling issues not fixed.... more research...

I decided to purchase a superlative arms bleed off gas block that has a larger range of adjustability AND odin works AR-10 Adjustable Buffer for what appears to be timing issues. SA Block came in, but i've been waiting on the OW buffer for close to 2 months now (purchased through optics planet, not from OW directly). OW gas block that came with barrel was installed by smith with barrel scope ( there are also conevenient alignemnt cuts on the barrel and block) so I know it was installed properly. When attempting to the remove the OW gas block and replace it the dang thing would not come of the barrel after a couple calls with odinworks directly I decided to to take it back to the smith who informed the block did not have a proper seal and the build up of gunk (after only 25 shots) had essentially stuck the block on the barrel.

New SA block installed and still waiting on OW buffer I decided to go back to the range and give it a try. With new BCG, and new gas block I was able to achieve ejection on all of 5/5 rounds fired after 5 adjustment shots. Still no feed. I believe the issue here is the bolt outrunnign the mag and I hope slowing it down with the adjustable buffer will fix this issue.

After doing a ton more research I have found that other users of this barrel had to drill the gas port out from .081" to .086" to achieve proper cycling. If the buffer does not fix my issues I will have to follow suit.

I am a HUGE Odinworks fan and this experience may not entirely drive me away from the manufacturer, BUT this barrel/gas block combo is a huge miss from OW and definitley has some kinks to work out.

If you buy this barrel, trash the block and get a better one off the bat.... mine is trashed now because the soft metal was damaged while trying to remove it from the barrel (No, no adhesive or loctite was used. Yes, the set screws were removed.

PS: the barrel is consistent and accurate.
Pros:
  • Barrel was consistent
Cons:
  • Gas Block
  • Gas Journal
  • Soft metals
