Wes's Review of Carson OPMOD DNV 1.0 Limited Edition Digital 1x10mm Night Vision Pocket Monocular

Its not usable as a tactical tool. Spotting other IR devices with its light turned off is about the only tactical use, and thats difficult to do without illuminating yourself when trying to turn the light off, as it turns on every time the unit it powered up. The floodlight should have had a selector switch instead of a single switch that you repeatedly press. It should’ve at least start with the light off. And you can’t just cover up the light and toggle the light button, because the light button doesn’t consistently work. You basically have to reveal your position with the IR flood light to turn it off. The red IR light is clearly visible to the human eye at all brightness levels, and you cant see without it on. The result is that anyone can clearly see you looking at them in the dark, and at greater distances than you can see with the monacle. The eyepiece is WAY too bright and is not adjustable. It hurts my eye, kills my night vision in that eye for a long time after using it. I used it for maybe an hour last night and my eye feels strained. The visual range is tiny. It’s like looking through a straw. It’s awkward to walk around while looking through it. It’s a cool toy to play with until you get bored of looking around your house in the dark, which for me took about an hour. You’re literally better off with a flashlight.
