Patrick's Review of Optical Dynamics 40mm Adjustable Target Illuminator Kit

After two weeks of using this light as both a weapon mounted hunting light and handheld spot light, I can easily say this Optical Dynamics Illuminator is amazing for 4 reasons:

1. There is no halo or beam spill. Sometimes we see long-range weapon lights needing a hood or halo shield to help contain or concentrate the beam. However, with the OD 40 you get a solid beam, without spill, emitted as a circle of light.

2. The illumination can be focused and the mounting system (comes with the kit) can be adjusted. With the light, you can zoom out to scan the area; then, you can zoom in to focus on your target. Since the beam is so focused and concentrated, the adjustment knobs on the mount (comes with the kit) align the beam with your scope's field of view.

3. There are no dark or hot spots. Whether you're shining this on your wall as soon as you unbox it, or aiming it 110 yards down range, you get an edge-to-edge, fully illuminated circle.

4. When my daughter turned it on and shined it on the houses across the street, she said, "Wowwwww!"

Note: I would not recommend this light as a dedicated weapon mounted tactical light because the beam. Even at its widest setting, the beam is very narrow, bright and DOESN'T offer the typical bright center spot + graduated peripheral illumination for situational awareness, .e.g., the Surefire X300 series lights.
Pros:
  • Edge-to-edge brightness
  • No beam spill or halo effect
  • Ability to focus the beam
Cons:
  • None
Best Used for:
  • night hunting
  • search and rescue
