Tanker Ray's Review of Osprey 10-40x50 Illuminated MilDot Reticle 30mm Tube Tactical Riflescope

I selected this scope because I have owned another one of this exact model (on a .308 Win) since 2011 and really liked it (especially since I obtained it for ~ half the price of this one). I ordered this scope for a AR-15 build in .223. The scope that I received had the same model number as the one I already owned and all of the specifications here (except the pictures) are correct and accurate to the best of my knowledge. However, there are several differences that I will point out here. First, the picture is of the early design, not the design that I received. Specifically, the diameter of the turrets are smaller on the new one (my 2011 model measures 1.32" and this one measures 1.00" and the side-focus knob measures 1.32" on my 2011 model and 1.45" on this one), the reticle has longer black bars and the MIL-Dots are smaller and closer together than the picture indicates. On my 2011 model the black bars in the reticle extend ~1/2 of the distance from the outer edge of view to the center, on this scope, these same black bars extend 2/3 to 3/4 of the distance from the outer edge to the center of the scope. This situation pushes the Mil-Dots closer together and they are also noticeable smaller in diameter. There are 4 Mil-dots on each side of the center as the picture indicates. Again, the pictures in the description are from the early model, not the one that was shipped to me. The biggest downside that I've found is the the MOA per turret revolution. On my 2011 model it was 10 MOA per revolution, on the scope that I received it is 7.5 MOA per revolution (both are 1/8" per click adjustments). This can complicate the long-range adjustments! I am a long-range target shooter and shoot (almost exclusively) from 200-1000 yards. My .308 Win drops ~39 MOA at that distance which is an easy adjustment on my old scope, not so much on the current design. 39 MOA adjustment on my old scope is 3 full revs + 9, on this scope it's 5 revs + 1.5 (this drop is my 900-yd adjustment for .223). I will create my drop chart with MOA as well as Revs+MOA so I can learn to use this. My biggest gripe is that the pictures here are from the early design, not the one that was shipped to me. Even though I received what I ordered it wasn't what I expected. However, I love my original Osprey and if this one works as well as it then I'll be happy. The glass is relatively clear but tends to become "unclear" when zoomed higher than ~36 (on both scopes). I've never bought any high-end scopes so I can't really compare either of these to anything above them in the price categories but you get what you pay for. With any high-magnification scope you should expect to see your heartbeat - that can be perceived as good or bad. I've had it out once for long-range shooting and it worked well. I only shot the course once so I can't comment on it's repeatability. I am creating data so I don't know if the MOA adjustments were accurate or not - I don't particularly care as long as they are repeatable. Shorter-range shooting really is overkill given the overall size and magnification. I didn't use the free rings that were included so won't comment on that. I don't use the lighted reticle but there appear to be 3 colors. Again, my gripe is that the picture doesn't match the product that I received and that's why I'm only giving 3 stars and not more. I will say that other online re-sellers seem to be using this same OLD picture. Check Osprey's website to see an accurate picture, and hopefully the online re-sellers will update their pictures. In summary - I'd give my 2011 TA104050IMD a full 5 stars, but this one only 3 due to the 7.5 MOA per turret rev.
Pros:
  • Value for the dollar
Cons:
  • 7.5 MOA per turret rev
Best Used for:
  • Long-Range Shooting
