Jeff's Review of Overwatch Precision Glock Magwell
I purchased this Overwatch Precision Magwell for my G23 (Gen 3) The product is well built and sturdy but I had a difficult time installing it.
Previously, I had purchased and installed a magwell of a different make for my G43X and the installation was much easier. The 43X magwell has two pieces. One that installs into the void in the bottom of the grip that acted as a anchor for the magwell. The actual magwell had an allen head screw that went through the bottom rear of the magwell and into the anchor, which holds it in place very well.
This Overwatch Magwell however is one piece and relies on a torx head screw going through the hole in the bottom of the rear grip of the pistol and threading into the magwell itself. Like most people I know, I have Talon adhesive grips on my pistol. The adhesive grip is not very thick but it is enough that you will need to cut out and remove any part of it that the magwell touches. The screw was barely long enough to reach through the grip and into the magwell threads.
The only instructions that were provided with this product said it should be"...installed by a certified armorer..." which is not very practical for most folks just trying to install a magwell with one screw. They also include a cheap little torx driver so they must know that the end user is likely to install it themselves.
Initially, before I cut out the adhesive grip I could only manage to get one or two threads to purchase. This was not a solid attachment and the magwell would detach fairly easily. I made two attempts to install it this way and ended up stripping out the first thread of the aluminum magwell when the screw kept popping out. Once I cut out the adhesive grip around the hole and squeezed the bottom of the grip with some Channel Locks, I was able to get the small screw to thread into the magwell further and hold fast.
I think a better solution would be for Overwatch Precision to cancel the cheap torx driver and include at least one, possibly two additional, longer screws so folks who have aftermarket grips can attach the magwell without having to modify the grips to install it securely.
