RustyOptics's Review of Pentax PF-80ED-A Spotting Scopes ED Glass 80mm Body 70950 / KU70115 Kit

I bought this scope for siting targets at long distances after considering other manufacturers. Based on some reviews, this appeared to be comparable to optics costing nearly twice as much. The image quality is clear throughout the zoom range, and the weight was also suitable for mobility. There is an included carrying case bag that will fit the main scope body with the eye piece attached. The focus knob works well, but I found that the knob turns a bit too easily such that if I'm not careful, I can bump the focus knob. There is only the main focus knob (no separate fine focus).

The front lens is threaded for an 82mm filter, which I used to view the 2017 solar eclipse using a solar filter. I may also use a "daylight" filter to protect the front optic.

The scope is fairly well balanced and will rest on a flat surface using the tripod mount; this can be helpful when laying on the ground and shooting rifle.

I debated about the angled / straight scope format and decided on this. It works well except when viewing at an extreme upward (say an eclipse or the moon) or downward angle, although the scope body can rotate in a ring that connects to the tripod mounting point.
Pros:
  • Clear image
  • Good quality manufacturing
  • Sturdy tripod mount
  • Quality controls and focus
Cons:
  • No fine focus knob
Best Used for:
  • Light astronomy
  • Target aquisition for long-range shooting
  • Spotting for target
